Unbelief Defeats Healing

What Is Unbelief?

Unbelief is the lack of trust or confidence in God’s character, promises, and power. It manifests as doubt, fear, or skepticism that God will act on our behalf. While faith believes in God’s goodness and sovereignty, unbelief questions His ability or willingness to fulfill His Word.

What Is The Impact of Unbelief / Doubt

  • Blocks God’s Work / Ties His Hands From Helping Us: Unbelief prevents us from partnering with God and releasing the flow of His supernatural grace.

“But without faith it is impossible to please Him, for he who comes to God must believe that He is, and that He is a rewarder of those who diligently seek Him.” Hebrews 11:6

A prophet is not without honor except in his own country, among his own relatives, and in his own house.” Now He could do no mighty work there, except that He laid His hands on a few sick people and healed them. And He marveled because of their unbelief.” Mark 6:4–6

“But let him ask in faith, with no doubting, for he who doubts is like a wave of the sea driven and tossed by the wind. For let not that man suppose that he will receive anything from the Lord;  he is a double-minded man, unstable in all his ways.” James 1:6-8

And we know that all things work together for good to those who love God, to those who are the called according to His purpose. Romans 8:28

  • Stunts Spiritual Growth: When we doubt, we settle for less rather than the blessings and abundant life Christ offers

“The thief does not come except to steal, and to kill, and to destroy. I have come that they may have life, and that they may have it more abundantly.” John 10:10

“Because they hated knowledge And did not choose the fear of the Lord, They would have none of my counsel And despised my every rebuke. Therefore they shall eat the fruit of their own way, And be filled to the full with their own fancies. For the turning away of the simple will slay them, And the complacency of fools will destroy them; But whoever listens to me will dwell safely, And will be secure, without fear of evil.”  Proverbs 1:29-33

  • Invites Defeat: Unbelief empowers the flesh and the enemy, leaving us vulnerable to fear and anxiety

“So Jesus said to them, “Because of your [a]unbelief; for assuredly, I say to you, if you have faith as a mustard seed, you will say to this mountain, ‘Move from here to there,’ and it will move; and nothing will be impossible for you.” Matthew 17:20

  • Eternal Condemnation / Wrath of God

“He who believes in the Son has everlasting life; and he who does not believe the Son shall not see life, but the wrath of God abides on him.” John 3:36

“if you confess with your mouth the Lord Jesus and believe in your heart that God has raised Him from the dead, you will be saved. For with the heart one believes unto righteousness, and with the mouth confession is made unto salvation.” Romans 10:9-10

How to Remove Unbelief / Overcome It

  1. Pray for Faith
    • Ask God to increase your faith (Luke 17:5).
  2. Engage in Fasting
    • Fasting sharpens spiritual focus, humbles the flesh, and amplifies prayer (Matthew 17:21 NKJV).
  3. Meditate on God’s Promises
    • Fill your mind with Scripture (Romans 10:17 NKJV).
  4. Confess Godly Beliefs
    • Speak aloud the truth of God’s Word over every area of doubt (Proverbs 18:21 NKJV).
  5. Practice Obedience in Small Steps
    • Trust God with little things to build confidence for greater steps of faith (Luke 16:10 NKJV).

Practical Examples of Unbelief

  • Disciples and the Epileptic Boy (Mark 9:14–29)
The disciples could not cast out the spirit because of their unbelief and unbelieving generation (Mark 9:19). Jesus healed the boy Himself, then explained, “This kind can come out by nothing but prayer and fasting” (Mark 9:29).
  • Israel at the Red Sea (Exodus 14:10–12)
Facing Pharaoh’s army, the people cried out in fear, doubting God’s deliverance.
  • Thomas’ Doubt (John 20:24–29)
Thomas would not believe Christ’s resurrection without physical proof
